In Germany, there are approximately 2.6 million children who are not able to play or develop freely, and who are left completely on their own although they are far too young. They are in this difficult situation because one or both of their parents is addicted to alcohol, medication or drugs.
The addiction of the parent has a considerable impact on the development of the children. They become extremely insecure and are hopelessly incapable of coping with the challenges that they face; they are frequently neglected and face the threat of violence. This considerably increases the risk of becoming addicted themselves.
The not-for-profit "Cornelius-Stiftung für Kinder suchtkranker Eltern" (Cornelius Foundation for Children of Parents who are Addicts) was set up in 2001 with the aim of championing the cause of the children. In the course of the work with expectant and young mothers, the smallest are supported, which considerably improves their development opportunities.
