About this project

Before the takeover of the National Socialists, this synagogue has been the heart of a large Jewish community once residing in the ‘city of Luther’. Soon after, the entire community was extinguished in very short time through forced dispossession, displacement and murder. The Nazi regime managed to destroy nearly everything that reminds us of their existence today. During the research process regarding the history of the synagogue, many connections to families and friends of the victims have been made and even friendships have been forged far over the borders of Germany, to Israel, Argentinia, the US, Switzerland and even Australia, just to mention a few. This way, the association is contributing to cultural reconciliation.
Alongside with the Lutherian sights in Eisleben, the synagogue is now already perceived as a cultural heritage sight – although the renovation process is yet to be finished. If you would like to support the many volunteers and help rebuilding the synagogue as a memorial for a significant part of regional and national history for locals and foreigners alike, please donate at betterplace.org.
