Singing has many positive effects on children. It enhances their intelligence, social skills, powers of concentration, thinking methods and the development of language. And: Singing encourages people to join in. All because singing is fun.
For the begin of 2017, the choir of the Cologne children’s university would like to record German children’s and near-forgotten folk songs on CD. The possibility of recording their own CD not only offers the children (who merely have to show a genuine interest in music to join the choir) new insights into a professionally made music production, it should also bring the recorded songs back into the cultural memories of other children – in families, schools and nurseries and should encourage them to join in. To be able to present this high quality format to the public, and in order to keep it free of costs for the children’s families, we are dependent on financial support from private and business donators.
The children’s choir:
In 2012, the choir of the Cologne children’s university was founded for the 625th anniversary of the University of Cologne as a co-operation between the collegium musicum and the Cologne children’s University. Since then, about 30 children between the ages of eight and fifteen (with a plan to expand to 70 choristers in 2017) sing with enthusiasm, and through their own work they experience music of the most different genres and styles.
They receive individual vocal training, and a deeper understanding of music thanks to the thematic focus on it. The aim is to enable the little choristers to experience the greatest possible variety of music. For more information: www.koelnerkinderuni-chor.de
The support association:
The Förderverein Universitätskonzerte e.V. is a non-profit association founded in 2009. The aim and purpose of the association is to support the work of the collegium musicum with all its musical ensembles of the university of Cologne. Only with the support of the association can many meaningful activities and wonderful projects be realised. The children’s choir of the university also belongs to the collegium musicum.
