Help protect the girls of Toukin from Female Genital Mutilation!
Since 1998 TERRE DES FEMMES supports the organisation Bangr Nooma (ABN) in its fight to end Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Burkina Faso. According to UNICEF 76% of girls and women in Burkina Faso are affected by FGM, although the practice is forbidden since 1996. The victims suffer from medical problems as well as psychological traumas for the rest of their lives.
Bangr Nooma means “ there is nothing more powerful than knowledge”. The organisation leads awareness-raising campaigns in Burkina Faso, as it is convinced that FGM can only be stopped through education and exchange. To this day ABN already protected more than 33.000 girls from FGM. With the support of your donation we want to help them keep up their great work!
The campaign in Toukin
Three years ago the king of Toukin approached Bangr Nooma to ask for help in the fight against FGM in his region. He realized that the community as a whole would benefit if the women in the village would not have to suffer the consequences of the circumcision. The king is an influential personality and plays an important role in the campaign, as he is able to convince other leaders and decision-makers to abandon the practice. ABN also trains animators who travel to distant villages with their mopeds, visit families and reach out to their peers, in order to raise awareness about the horrible consequences of FGM. Through interactive, creative activities such as lively lectures, discussions groups or pictures, videos and theatre sketches, they involve the whole population in the debate about FGM.
Burial of Female Genital Mutilation
The goal of the campaign is to convince the entire community of Toukin to say “NO to FGM”. Once all citizens agree to abandon the practice, the circumcision instruments will be buried in the ground. This is a symbolic act, in which the village elders, the religious leaders, as well as the ex-circumcisers vow to end FGM for good. After the funeral a village committee watches over the compliance with the new rules against FGM. The funeral is scheduled for the 12. November 2016. In order to make the successful completion of this campaign possible, money needs to be raised for the remaining awareness-raising activities as well as for the funeral ceremony.
