    About this project

It is the dream of the children in the Ban Buamlao village school to learn English. Doing so will massively enhance their future employment prospects. For instance, they will be able to work in Laos burgeoning tourist industry. Such opportunities are incredibly important in one of the world’s poorest countries with subsistence agriculture accounting for 80% of employment.

The children are enthusiastic students with attendance growing rapidly from 100 students in 2006 to 140 students in 2007.

The village school consists of three enclosed classrooms and one open air, stand-alone classroom. The enclosed classrooms are dilapidated, and lack electricity or running water.

The school is desperately in need of supplies, which are constantly running scarce. Some of the students have workbooks but no textbooks, some have no workbooks and others have no textbooks or workbooks at all. Most of the books are in poor condition.

The school paper supply was exhausted long ago, and the chalk supply is running very low. Most of the children are without erasers or pencils.

Ban Buamlao village is located approximately ten kilometers from Luang Prabang near the western shores of the Mekong river. It is inhabited by subsistence farmers who utilize slash and burn farming practices to prepare fields and grow crops. The village has no electricity or running water, and the estimated average monthly income of each of the seventy or eighty families who live there is between £10-£20 per month.

By donating to this project you can help make a difference to the lives of 140 children attending a rural school whose dream is to learn English but currently lack the means to do so.
