Tiljala Society For Human And Educational Development is grassroots non profit organization working for the overall development of the rag pickers since last 28 years. All our beneficaries are the dwellers of illegal sattlements situated beside the railway tracks and dirty canals. Most of them are rag pickers by profession and they belong to the ultrapoor section of the society.They have taken up this profession as it doesn't need any investment. We are presently running five educational centers at various areas in Kolkata - Topsia, ParkCircus, Narkeldanga,Tangra and Mir Meher Ali. From our experience we have learnt that the children of ragpickers are prone to drop out school mainly because of financial constraints. As soon as the child attains a certain age six years and beyond the parents induct them into ragpicking. This totally alieneates them from studies and sooner or later they become dropouts and victims of child labour. In order to prevent this from happening we are are planning to develop a support system for the ragpicker family which will encourage them to send and their siblings in school and most importantly retain them in school.
How to go about : We wiil be identifying those children who are keen to study but are likely to dropout in the near future due to financial reasons. The selection of the children will be done by the educators who intimately know them and later screened by a committee from the organisation for final selection. The selection and screening will be based on preset parameters such as
1) The child must belong to a ultra poor family.
2) The child must show keen interest in studies.
3) The child attends the schools regularly.
4) The parents must assure us that they will not send their child to work .
The support which we intend to provide will be both in cash and kind.We will be supplying the school books,school bags, monthly stationary etc. and we will be paying cash for school fees, tution fees, travel allowance and refreshments.The breakup is given in the budget section.
