We are a group of students currently working on the European Citizens' Initiative (ECI) "More Than Education - Shaping Active and Responsible Citizens". Our ECI aims at strengthening civic competences among young Europeans by improving the way civic education is taught at school.

A democratic society relies for its legitimacy on the ability of every person to know their mind. Ineffective civic education sabotages the democracy itself. We witness that civic education in Europe differs a lot at the moment, which creates a diverging understanding of our society. Coordination in this topic is essential for the cohesion and stability a democratic European Union.

The European Citizens' Initiative is a tool of direct democracy by the European Union. Once we have collected one million signatures in at least seven different EU member states within one year, we can call on the European Commission to make a legisative proposal regarding our topic.

With our ECI we ask the European Commission to support member states in their responsibility to enable young people from all backgrounds to develop competences for participating responsibly in society. To promote cohesion, action should be coordinated throughout the Union by setting a long-term agenda, creating benchmarks, undertaking periodic evaluations and sharing best practice.

Collecting one million signatures is a huge challenge, especially regarding the fact that our team only consists of volunteers. In order to provide training to our helpers, to buy materials for our public campaign and to cover organisational expanses (such as server costs), we rely on your donations!

Thank you for supporting direct democracy and for helping to improve civic education in Europe!
