Teacher and environmentalist Gbati Nikabou and his co-workers have been actively promoting appropriate agriculture and forestry in the region of Bassar, in Northern Togo, since 1997.
Small-scale farmers are fighting hard to force enough food for their families out of the naturally poor soils. Environmental changes, overuse of the arable land due to the raising population, and competition for land against big agribusinesses make the situation worse.
SALEM-Togo helps people to secure their livelihood by using new, and recovering lost, knowledge. They learn how to increase yields and use forests sustainably without expensive mineral fertilisers, pesticides or hybrid seeds.
A new training centre, featuring a tree nursery and demonstration fields, has been established in the community of Baghan near Bassar. Now, this training centre is beginning to show signs of vitality. You can see the animation of co-workers planting trees in the nursery and on the arable land. The training programme for the farmers is underway in its development and the first classes have already been given.
We plan to convert 30 ha (74 acres) of community owned forest into an example of sustainably used forestry, to mitigate the overuse of the area.
NGOs, parishes, etc. can rent the training centre for their own events through contacting Gbati Nikabou (salem-togo@salem-mail.net).

Gbati Nikabou, écologiste et pédagogue, s'engage avec ses collègues depuis 1997 dans la région de Bassar dans le nord du Togo pour valoriser l'agriculture et l'exploitation forestière. Les fermiers de la région travaillent dur pour subsister et obtenir assez de nourriture sur les sols appauvris. Les modifications de l'environnement, la surexploitation liée à l'augmentation de la population et la concurrence entre grandes firmes agraires rendent la situation plus critique encore.
SALEM-Togo aide les personnes à garantir les bases vitales en apportant un savoir nouveau et tombé dans l'oubli. Ils apprennent ainsi à augmenter les rendements agricoles et à utiliser les ressources forestières de manière durable, sans avoir recours à des engrais coûteux, à des produits de protection des plantes ou à des graines hybrides.
Un centre de formation situé dans la commune de Baghan, dans les environs de Bassar, a ouvert ses portes depuis 2011, avec une pépinière et des espaces de démonstration. Le centre de formation est aujourd'hui particulièrement vivant. On y fait des plantations et des programmes de formation sont mis en place pour les fermiers.
La prochaine grande manifestation sera un séminaire de 7 jours sur la médecine naturelle en juillet 2014.
