About this project

Rooibos tea is tasty, healthy and has a century long tradition in South Africa. The Rooibos plant grows exclusively in the sandy mountain regions in Western South Africa. This area, the Suid Bokkeveld, is home to small scale farmers of the Fairtrade and Organic certified Heiveld cooperative. The cooperative helped its members that were discriminated as "coloureds" during Apartheid to free themselves from isolation and now sell their product for fair prices on international markets.
However land is not sufficient for all members, most only possess one or two hectars. Land access is still a big challenge and subject to origin and skin colour.
This year the rooibos farmers have a unique oportunity to by the 2.549 ha Bloomfonteinfarm for 4 million Rand (~230.000 €). 150 ha arable land are spread over a huge natural landscape with high biodiversity.
By buying back the land of their ancestors the young farmers of Heiveld can stay in the region, do sustainable farming and maintain their culture and traditional life style.
The purchase will be operated through the land trust "Three Fountains Trust". To get the afforded amount together, the trust is applying for a loan. Furthermore Heiveld needs aditional support to get the money together. For a donation campaign several German and Austrian organisations in the fair trade field have joined forces to reach a broad public. These are dwp, Weltladendachverband, Naturland, ARGE Weltläden Österreich and Lemonaid & Charitea e.V.
You can help Heiveld to make the campaign a success! Be a part of it and make a donation!
For a fair access to land - for sustainable Rooibos farming - for small scale farmers in South Africa!
