About this project

What could global democracy look like?

This will be the topic of the first Model UN Parliament, taking place in Halle and Berlin (Germany) from 22nd to 24th April 2016. 50 students will take on the roles of diplomats in order to debate and negotiate the possible statues of a "world parliament" for one weekend.

What is so special about the Model UN Parliament?

You already may have heard of, or even participated in Model United Nations (MUNs) before. But the Model UN Parliament isn't an ordinary MUN: Not real-existing organs (like the General Assembly or the Security Council) are being simulated, but rather a world parliament, which the United Nations are lacking at the moment. We want to take action to introduce such an organ!
As it is the first-ever project of its kind, the participants will debate the basic statutes of the Assembly: What should a world parliament look like and what should be the rights and duties of such a body? Thus this simulation has a concrete goal - the principles of all upcoming Model UN Parliament Conferences will be negotiated!

What is the idea behind this?

The visionary idea of a United Nations Parliamentary Assembly (UNPA) has been debated in policy and expert circles for some years now. The proposal is to establish a parliamentary body next to the UN General Assembly – as a pragmatic step toward a potential world parliament and a solution to the UN's lack of democracy. The delegates could be elected directly by the people instead of being respresentatives of the national governments.

We need your help!

If you want to actively support the realization of this project, we would be really thankful for a donation of your choice.
Our work organizing the Model UN Parliament is completely on a voluntary basis. Your donation helps to reduce the costs for all participants and thereby to ease the participation! This is very important to us.
For all donors: If you send an e-mail to christian.sigl@ifair.eu, we will gladly give you an update on the outcomes of the conference.
If this pilot project will succeed, further Model UN Parliament Conferences will be possible and we can together take one important step towards a "world parliament"!
