    The Cause
With around 73,000 refugees in Berlin alone, the city will need to come up with viable solutions to help these individuals rebuild their lives. Increasing access to education to a small but tangible portion of today’s refugees is the first step toward making this happen. With this in mind, Sharehaus Refugio and Catalyst have teamed together to create a learning space for refugees in Berlin, which will facilitate their integration in local society and enhance access to education for student refugees.

    The 2016 Catalyst Tour
On January 17, Rana and Or, two students in the Founding Class at Minerva, will embark on a train journey from London to Istanbul, stopping in ten European capitals along the way. The 2016 Tour is part of a larger initiative called Catalyst, which strives to engage young people in conversations about how education’s role in helping to solve some of today’s most complex global challenges, including the education crisis many of today’s refugees face.

For these individuals, accessibility to education has been significantly reduced, which has far-reaching consequences. The Tour will bring young people together at school workshops and organizations to create dialogue, raise awareness, and brainstorm realistic solutions to this global challenge.

    The Project
To raise awareness as well as funds for the Sharehaus collaboration, individuals can sponsor part of the 2016 Tour through Europe for two Euros per kilometer. The 4,500 kilometer trip aims to raise a total of 9,000 Euros for Access to Education, a joint project between Sharehaus Refugio and Catalyst.

Sharehaus Refugio is a Berlin-based community initiative that brings together refugees and locals by housing them under one roof in order to share knowledge, skills, stories, and daily life. The Refugio is also a hub for many local initiatives — including those in education — to come together and start new social enterprises. The Access to Education project will help refugees continue their education, develop language skills, and resettle. The money raised will go toward creating a learning space within the Refugio and purchasing much-needed resources for student refugees, including laptops, books, and classes taught by local teachers.

As the first Minerva cohort will arrive in Berlin in 2016, the Access to Education project will continue to be managed by students, for students, after the tour completes.
