About this project
First set up at the Hungarian-Croatian border, the No Borders Kitchen successively moved to different places in Slovenia after Hungary's decision to close its borders. When Slovenian refugee camps were taken over by "professional" organizations, the kitchen has been operating in Greece.
We understand our work not simply as "humanitarian relief"; we seek to make a clear political statement for everybody's freedom of movement and against "Fortress Europe" and its increasing militarization. We believe in democratic self-organization and therefore operate our own autonomous kitchen instead of enlisting with large hierarchical (and rather inflexible) organizations. We try to source food locally whenever possible and provide vegan food (which also comes with additional food hygiene benefits and is compatible with the dietary restrictions of major religions).
Depending on local circumstances and crew size, we have been able to serve up to several thousand meals a day. Due to the chaotic situation along the Balkan route and the transient status of the people we serve food to, our expenses are not limited to foodstuffs - we're also facing significant costs for disposable food containers and gasoline, as well as fuel for our gas cookers.
We are therefore asking for your donations in order to both reimburse volunteers who have advanced large sums from their own slender pockets and keep the kitchen running in the future!
