The scenic village of El Zapote, located on the western strip of the pacific coast in El Salvador, is only a short trip to the Guatemalan boarder. The area inhabits around 1500 people and contains a small health care center (Unidad de Salud) in El Zapote.
At the primary health care center there is only one Physician, that is rotating every year as it is part of the final year of medical studies in El Salvador. Additionally the staff contains one nurse, a secretary and two so called "Promotores de Salud". "Promotores" do not necessarily have a medical education, nevertheless they are a huge help by giving lectures, assisting in vaccinations or inducing labor.
Rural primary health care centers show by means of there remotness signs of resource-challenged settings. In El Zapote we initiated a donation of essential medicines in cooperation with Action Medeor e.V.
Unfortunately the "Unidad de Salud" still lacks medical equipment such as a ECG (Electrocardiogramm).
During our next visit in December 2015, we would like cooperate in improving diagnostical aspects by providing a ECG.
