    About this project

    D. Kramer from Social Justice Coalition is responsible for this project
The severely inadequate access to proper sanitation services in Khayelitsha causes many health and safety risks. The issue of violence and crime is a constant reality for residents. Our community leaders are often inundated with reports of rape and other forms of physical assault near the public toilets, particularly at night. People are scared to go to the toilets, which are anywhere between thirty meters and a number of kilometres away from their house, for fear of being targeted. Often the toilets will be locked at night and very poorly lit, and residents will have to find other means during later hours. In addition, as many of the dwellings are so close together, there are no properly lit roads or pathways to get to the toilets and residents are often forced to wander in between shacks at night in dark pathways between houses risking their safety en route. Inadequate access to decent sanitation facilities also has major health implications particularly for young children.

The Clean, Safe and Accessible Toilets Campaign cuts across a number of different issues that ultimately centre on the universal right to basic human dignity, as stipulated in the South African Constitution. That dignity relates to issues of health, self-respect, safety from violence, access to proper services, and ultimately the most basic of human rights. In the course of this campaign, engagement with government, as well as aiding communities to also play a part in bettering their own lives and surroundings, are both considered integral to achieving our goals. The focus of the campaign is therefore to both pressure government to fulfill its role, while at the same time, working with and encouraging the community to play its own part in that process, thereby allowing the inhabitants to take ownership of the achievements and development.
