Improving the Water Supply for Berber Families - Implementation

    Ingenieure ohne Grenzen e.V.
A project from Ingenieure ohne Grenzen e.V. in Tafraout Tal, Morocco
The water supply of berber families in Morocco will be improved by training and technical knowledge transfer about optimised water catchment and treatment, to ensure the long-term livelihood of the families.

    About this project

Sandra Gruhlke from Ingenieure ohne Grenzen e.V. is responsible for this project
In Tafraout valley, located in the south-east of Morocco, about 70 Berber families live along a temporarily water-bearing river in a traditional semi-nomadic way of life. Their residential area extends over 25 square kilometres, where they are farming and raising cattle. The residents get their water from wells that are between 20 and 60 m deep. The climate in the area is very arid and the groundwater recharge is done by a few heavy rain events in the northern catchment area. Due to the increasing water shortage their livelihood is in danger.

Therefore the main goal of the project is the development of a sustainable water supply, so that the families can stay and maintain their semi-nomadic lifestyle.
As a first step Ingenieure ohne Grenzen e.V carried out an exploration journey in November 2014 (see also completed project: Improvement of water supply for nomadic families - exploration). The team examined the feasibility of various technologies non-technical solutions as well. The members of Ingenieure ohne Grenzen registered the wells located in the project area using GPS and created a data base including information about the water quality, well- and water depth. They also documented the catchment and usage of water by the locals. Beyond that the key element of the exploration was the cooperation with the local project partners including the association founded by the Berber families ,Akbar Association for Development and Culture Sustainable '. Ingenieure ohne Grenzen e.V. collaborate very closely in order to ensure the continuation of the planned measurements in the long run. The most important aspect of the trip was the direct contact with local people and the opportunity to talk with them about their concerns.

After reviewing the results of the exploration, the implementation will pursue the aim of the project by a combination of training and technical assistance as a second step. Especially the water quality and consumption has to be optimised. Training on a more efficient use of the already partially installed drip irrigation systems conveys the professional care of the hoses and filters. This makes a significant contribution to saving water and reduces the salinization of the soil. In the exploration it was found, that a new installation of existing pipes with special sleeves can reduce line losses and saves more valuable water. Additionally the existing wells can be protected from contamination by simple tools like bordering made of clay and appropriate covers. Besides that, training on hygiene should be conducted in particular to improve water quality in the wells and ensure appropriate water storing in tanks. This measure should improve the health situation and reduce diseases. This transfer of knowledge should optimize the use and benefit of the limited high-quality ‘water’ and allows the people to continue to live in Tafraout valley and to farm successfully.
