Faudijothe ist situated near the Bangladesh border and most people live on poorly paid tea garden jobs. Often, schools are a long way from their homes and, therefore, it is customary that simple hostels provide accommodation to schoolchildren.
25 schoolgirls are admitted to St.Anne’s Hostel, but only few parents are able to pay the monthly allowances for their food. Unfortunately, the Convent and its 5 Sisters lack the means to provide adequate every day nutrition for these 25 adolescent schoolgirls. Recent termination of an American relief project has added to their difficulties.
This situation called for imagination and constructive creativity, and the Sister developed own ideas such as installation of an irrigation system for vegetable and fruit (possibly even crop) cultivation, as well as acquirement of 50 laying hens.
Part of the irrigation project will be sponsored by the Sisters’ Congregation while the unpaid balance will be settled from my private funds. For the acquirement of 50 laying hens as well as the indispensable henhouse construction, I invite the generosity of willing supporters through betterplace.
Starting this poultry keeping stands for long-term support and lasting effect with yet another positive outcome: to eliminate the sense of being dependent on aid from outside. On the strength of own power, it will be possible to enhance future chances.
Moreover, the joint keeping of the poultry will boost the schoolgirls’ sense of responsibility, team work competences, and corporate feeling as well as impart knowledge and experience.
On the evidence of poor educational opportunities for girls even in today’s India, it is of significant importance that these 25 girls will retain their opportunity to attend schooling by maintaining their nutrition.
