About this project

Uhambo the Shonaquip Foundation needs EUR 2,500 to provide advocacy and care giver training for parents of children with disablities living in Mandela Park settlement of Cape Town. Mandela Park (or Imizamo Yethu) is a sprawling informal housing settlement that is home to >50,000 people living in severe poverty. Living conditions are overcrowding and inaccessible with poor sanitation and high levels of crime and unemployment.
We plan to reach every household with a child with a disability, assess the child's needs for wheelchairs and assistive devices, while providing hands on skills training and information for the parents and caregivers. We will create a local parent support group and network this to exisiting services in the broader health care and social services. Once this advocacy and training is complete, the Foundation will then raise the necessary funds to provide the appropriate wheelchairs and support services to this area.
These wheelchairs must be correctly fitted to accommodate each child’s unique need and be appropriate for the environment in which they are living. When children with disabilities are provided with appropriate devices, secondary health complications (pressure sores, spinal deviations and chest infections) decrease, reducing unnecessary suffering and health complications and costs for the families and for the National health care system. With the right wheelchair and knowledge these children will also have the opportunity to attend schools or day care centres and participate more meaningfully in thier local community, enriching their lives and providing an opportunity to an improved quality of life.
