About this project

The rugged topography of Konso with limited flat land and unreliable repeated shortage rainfall of 750 mm per year, an increasing population, low productivity of the land and less access to safe water have been extensively aggravating food insecurity and poverty in the area. Konso is a pre-dominantly a farmer population cultivating for their own consumption; coffee beans, cotton, sorghum, mango trees and papaya trees among others and from them all, moringa stenopetala is the key nutrient. This plant grows at 1800 m high on the sea level where other trees could hardly survive and feeds 500 people / km² in the area.
Due to lack of storage rooms for the crop, many harvests are lost as a result of harsh local weather conditions. Konso-Organic fund raising campaign leaded in situ by the local enterprise Waka Waka Organic Moringa Products export PLC will provide 250.000 kg load capacity for moringa powder or coffee collection, processing, packing and storage.
The ground surface has already been yielded in Karat and the required equipment and hardware donated by some of our collaborators. Those funds raised will finance the construction costs of 35x50m storage room and the local building materials, cement, stones and canvas for the ground, logs for enclosing the building and Hamayila layer (a local grass that grows 3m near the rivers) for the roof.
The storage room will employee in the meantime initially 10 locale people, mainly among the female community, and will also offer a cover market to the area, still inexistent today. Konso province only hosts 2 open air markets twice a week and traders such as purchasers have some hours walk distance to reach those. The construction will serve as a model for future constructions in the area and also as a showcase to all locals, visitors and tourists.
Your 10.000€ contributions won’t only provide job positions to women, they will also feed Konso community and boost local farming and economy for their future self-efficiency.
