    About this project

Matthias B. from AVIF - Able Volunteers International Fund is responsible for this project
We are going to support the British online charity AVIF for a project in a Kenyan Maasai community. During the month of June, we are going to spend three weeks with the Maasai of Nkiito, which is a local Maasai community located in a very rural area right next to the Tanzanian border. Our primary goals are to improve water supply and education in Nkiito by helping to build a rainwater storage facility, by providing school uniforms and teaching material and by teaching the Massai’s children in the local (elementary and primary) school.

The Maasai live their lives amid the Kenyan wilderness in an astonishing way. They are amazingly resourceful (partial) nomads who live in total harmony with nature – with the greatest respect of the scarce resources they exploit to survive. Securing water supply and education for the whole community, however, remains a major challenge for most Maasai communities, as it is the case for the ~150 Maasai and ~40 pupils in Nkiito.
The Maasai are extremely dependent on rain, which is probably the most important resource for them and their cattle. Day by day, the Maasai women walk tens of kilometers by foot to collect contaminated rainwater from the nearest water holes so that they, their men, their children and their cattle can drink. With the region near Amboseli national park becoming drier and drier, securing water supply in Nkiito is of paramount importance. We have posted a video in the tab "news" which illustrates this issue more in detail.

The initial idea of AVIF volunteers was to build a well in Nkiito that would provide groundwater to the community. However, this project had to be abandoned to due geological reasons that make it extremely complicated to build a well in that area. There has been built a rainwater storage facility instead which needs to be improved so that it does not leak anymore. Your donations will allow us to buy building material and consult a professional to finalize the construction of the rainwater storage facility.

As far as education in Nkiito is concerned, AVIF volunteers have raised funds to pay the local teacher. AVIF volunteers have even managed to pay education for the young Maasai women over 16 so that they are no longer forced to get married but do have a choice. Nevertheless, Nkiito does lack money to pay for school uniforms, books and other teaching material. We aim at providing all this to every single pupil in Nkiito, which will be possible thanks to your donations. We have already contacted Jackson, one of Nkiito’s Maasai, who already told us we could buy all this in the nearest town.

Show some kindness for Nkiito’s Maasai and help us improve water supply and education in rural Kenya. Donations of 520€ in total would allow us to greatly improve the situation in Nkiito – the Maasai and their children will be more than grateful for your support.

    Kindest regards,
    Julia, Verena, Matthias
