    About this project

    S. Ramanan from Mending Tiny Hearts is responsible for this project
The cost involved in medical care in India is very high, especially for children requiring surgery for correction of heart defects.Unfortunately, congenital heart disease has now become a disease of the poor. The affluent ones are able to have an antenatal diagnosis and have the option of terminating or continuing the pregnancy. But the economically weak ones do not have access to antenatal diagnosis, and are caught up with surprises once the baby is born, and they are the ones who cannot afford the treatment as well.

The focus of Government of India is to cater to primary health care such as Immunizations, Prevention and Treatment of Diarrhea and Other communicable diseases and ensuring Nutrition for children. It is a well known fact that public hospitals lack the resources to handle most of the cardiac patients with the heavy load. So these patients turn to private hospitals. The insurance scheme provided by the government is useful to many patients but there is a lot of discrepancy in the actual cost to hospital and the amount provided by the govt. This is where philanthropy is needed to bridge the gap to a limited extent.

The average costs for cardiac surgery in a private institution ranges from Rs.80,000 to Rs 4.5 lakhs depending upon the complexity. The various state government health schemes irrespective of complexity only provide Rs80,000 to Rs1.25 Lakhs. So the children with more complex heart diseases are not catered to by many private hospitals.
We are currently working with NGOs such as EKAM Foundation and Shankara Heart Foundation to conduct camps and identify children who require cardiac surgery. Since most of these children require financial assistance for surgery, we actively help the parents raise finances. We contact heart foundations, individual donors and corporates to make donations either as cash or in the form of consumables required for the surgery. We also actively persuade the treating hospitals to truncate their bills on a case to case basis.

To GIVE A ROUGH IDEA OF THE ESTIMATES INVOLVED,
    1. Cost of consumables used during Cardiac surgery:Euro 850 Rs 50000/ surgery

    2. Prolonged ICU stay: Euro 1750 (INR150000/ ) day ie. Euro1200 (75000 INR) for 5 days

    3. Cost of devices: PDA or ASD device Euro 900 - 1500 (INR 60000 to 100000)

4.Cost of surgical patches/ grafts etc: Euro 350 ( 20000 INR) per piece

    5.Cost of Conduits / Homografts :Euro 1500 ( INR 100000)

We identify deserving patients after scrutinizing their financial background with the help of a medical social worker The kind of help we are looking at is in terms of funding that may be used for surgical and post operative care for these children with heart disease.
