My name is Lars Gockel, I am 21 years old and in May 2015 I will go to Cape Town for 8 months to work with street children.
The organisation Skate-Aid will send me to South Africa to work in cooperation with the Salesian Institute of Don Bosco which is very involved in the worldwide support of socially disadvantaged children. Through the work of the Salesian Institute the children get the chance for a new start away from the streets. Besides a lot of recreation and sport facilities the children get the opportunity to go to school and training courses in order to simplify their reintegration into society.
During my stay in Cape Town it will be my task to build up a skatepark which will be meant to serve as a new shelter where the kids can finally feel recognized and valued and which gives them another chance to reintegrate into society. Through my work I intend to support their personal development by making them want to go to school and training courses of the Institute.
I dropped out of college because
I realised that I don´t just want to work for the profit orientated economy after finishing my studies. I realized that I have the chance and the responsibility to change things that I absolutely don´t agree with. In my opinion too many people in this world are driven by egoism and greed for profit and they often forget people in other countries who have not been so lucky in their life. Due to that we should work continuously on making these lives worth living and we should try to prevent the consequences of social disparity.
When I first heard about skate-aid I was absolutely fascinated by the concept which consists of connecting skateboarding with social work in order to support street children. In my opinion this project is a really good opportunity to get in contact with street children and to help them get stability, security and recognition. I know that I can´t change the entire life of these children but what I can do is to improve their current situation and maybe I can achieve something positive in the longer term.
Skateboarding is an essential part of my lifestyle since seven years now and this project is my chance to perform an overarching task connecting my athletic, technical, social and educational abilities.
My personal wish is to make a statement that makes people stop and reflect about our current cohabitation and our responsibility towards the living conditions of every human being on our earth. That is my motivation.
To finally realize this project I am dependant on donations. These donations will be used for the servicing of the skatepark and to realise small excursions with the kids. I would be very happy if you would decide to become a part of it. You also help by sharing or forwarding this page or telling your friends about this project. If you have any questions and/or suggestions please let me know.
Let´s change our world for a better tomorrow !
