Über den Tellerrand

Über den Tellerand (‘beyond your plate’ in English) is a commonly used German expression for open-mindedness. Since 2013, Über den Tellerrand e.V. has been committed to promoting active coexistence and a shared future for all people living in Germany. We create spaces and opportunities that facilitate low-threshold encounters between people with and without a history of flight and migration, promoting the formation of friendships, intercultural exchange, and social participation, as well as the dismantling of prejudices. 

At our popular cooking evenings and other creative and sporting activities, people from a wide variety of backgrounds regularly meet and get to know and appreciate each other in an informal setting. These activities are free of charge and open to everyone. 

Our work is a response to pressing social problems: more and more people are experiencing loneliness, while public places without consumer pressure are disappearing. At the same time, the tone of public discourse is becoming harsher – especially with regard to migration and diversity. Our answer to this are lived encounters, belonging, and mutual appreciation. Our offerings create places where genuine connection is possible – on an equal footing and regardless of origin or status. 

We may not be the ones fighting on the barricades – but we are the ones cooking behind the barricades and making sure that everyone is provided with food and love. In times of polarizing discourse and right-wing slogans, Über den Tellerrand promotes encounter, tolerance, and peaceful, open coexistence. Our weapons of resistance are wooden spoons, humor, and an unshakeable belief in a better us.

Über den Tellerrand motivates cross-border encounters and exchanges between cultures. Our network now includes communities in over 40 cities in Germany, Austria, Czech Republic and Colombia.

With a small donation, a supporting membership, or volunteer work, you can help us continue our work and create a better us. We are a constantly growing association, and administration and accounting are becoming increasingly expensive. We can also use donations for this.
