Objectives and Outcomes: Based in an impoverished rural area in Northwest Cameroon, Green Care Association works to alleviate high unemployment and food insecurity in Shisong and surrounding villages. Most families rely on subsistence farming to survive, which almost never provides enough food or income to support regular meals, let alone hospital bills or school fees. We aim to support rural subsistence farming communities by training them on mushroom cultivation and establishing a cooperative as a convenient point of sale for their products. Because meat and other sources of protein and essential amino acids are expensive, the diets of most families consist largely of nutrient-poor carbohydrates such as corn, yams, and potatoes. By cultivating mushrooms at home, farmers will improve the nutritional value of their families’ food. We will also train farmers to scale up their mushroom farms in order that they produce a surplus with which they can support their families without putting additional pressure on natural resources.
