"Rise Haiti" is a NGO carrying out a project that aims to sustainably improve the sanitary and health conditions in Haitian schools. For this we focus on three main work streams: sanitary infrastructure, education to teachers and children and building an inter-professional student network comprising various universities. We base these activities on the solid foundation of the trusting partnership between Rise Haiti and our partner organization Foi et Joie Haiti. We are supported by the University of St.Gallen.
We chose to prolong the focus on sanitation because of the disastrous sanitary situation which presents itself in Haiti. Over 60% of Haitian schools do not possess proper toilets and over 75% do not have access to clean water. Additionally, school children have the highest incidence of cholera, a disease which is highly infectious and can be prevented through proper sanitation equipment. Schools are one main locus where diseases are spread throughout the Haitian population.
By providing applicable and sustainable toilet solutions to Foi et Joie’s school network, we want to take up the fight against the spread of fatal diseases like cholera and diarrhea. Moreover, we make sure to increase the safety of children, who will not have to relieve themselves in the open anymore, being exposed to dangerous situations. We want to ensure that Haitian schools are a safe place where children can live and learn in an environment that does not make them sick.
After beginning with a pioneer project which will be conducted by us and our partner organizations in February 2015, we plan to roll-out the project towards the rest of the school network. In February already 474 Haitians will have access to a proper toilet in the first school. By mid-2016 our plan is to provide this to a total of 14 schools which represent 3483 Haitian persons.
We are a team of nine highly diverse and motivated students from the University of St. Gallen and are aiming to make a great impact by conducting a concrete project tackling a serious issue. You can support us with your donation. We aim to collect 5000 CHF through this website. This sum would allow us to build 6 toilets in Haiti, enough for a small school in the network.
