About this project
Since the inception of Free Primary Education (FPE) in 2003, the quality of learning and resources dropped dramatically. The facilities at the School are completely dilapidated, with damages dating back to the early 90’s still in existence. The Swimming Pool, School Hall, Library and Sports field are in a deplorable state, and the classrooms have not had any renovations for years. The main facilities (Hall, Library) are now sharing their space with teachers who have to live on the premises. Some classrooms were also converted to Staff Quarters. The classrooms are in complete disrepair, with leaking roofs, broken desks and chairs, broken window panes and even broken walls. At one time the school population had dropped to 529, and is now back up to 850. At its prime in the past, the school had over 1500 students.
There is a major shortage of School Teachers, with the Teachers Service Commission providing only 15 teachers for a student population of 850.Clubs and extra-curricular activities are conducted minimally with the few resources available. Consequently the performance of the students in the Class 8 national examinations (KCPE) has been steadily dropping, to now slightly over the 50% pass mark in 2013.
The Education sector in Kenya has faced many challenges (financial, physical & human resources). The Government provides Kshs.127 (1.1 Euro) per student per term for their complete care. This is the allocation for school repairs, maintenance and improvements. An amount of Kshs 5400/-(47 Euro) per term is provided by the Government for text books for an entire class year. I.e All standard 8 students are allocated that amount, making it approximately 39/=(0.3 Euro) each student per term.
The alumni of the school have formed an Association to launch a massive Transformation program through a project dubbed Project #Shule Yetu which is Swahili for 'My School' to denote the pride they have from the nine years of primary education and networks built there. The main goal for Project #ShuleYetu is to restore the St George's Primary School to its former glory, adapt to changes in Digital Technology and generally be a shining example to all other Public Schools in the country. The school should be returned to a safe and calm learning environment. There is great need to ensure the nurturing environment is corrected and able to motivate the students to fit into world-class institutions later on. According to Nairobi City County, the proposed costs for renovation and repair of the complete school is Kshs 200 million (Euro 1.73M).
