PFK is a small group of people dedicated to improving the conditions for the pyramid horses in Cairo, Egypt. The working horses in this area are being used to take tourists and local Egyptians on rides around the pyramids and the surrounding desert. Since the uprising in 2011 Egypt has seen a dramatic decline in tourism, and this affects both the horses and the owners who rely on tourists for work. Combined with poverty, none or little education, widespread equine babesiosis and roughage being expensive in a desert country, the result is inadequate conditions for the working animals.
Due to little general knowledge about horses, poor nutrition, illnesses like equine babesiosis, and a lot of work on hard surfaces, PFK treats various issues like colic, colds, equine malaria, saddle sores and other wounds, laminitis, and various joint-and tendon injuries. Owners are shown how to provide ongoing care at home.
PFK holds both clinics where horses, camels and donkeys get treated free of charge, and offers fostering schemes. Fostering allows the horse to stay in PFK's stables, eat, rest and get daily treatment. Cairo is very densely populated and most working class owners don't have proper boxes or ménages; horses are usually tied up if not ridden. Fostering provides a welcome relief for both horse and owner.
Every day we receive messages from people all over the world asking "How can I help?” for which we are immensely grateful. PFK now owns 20 rescue horses, and continue to continually foster horses and offer free medical care to local horse owners. We rely on donations and would never be able to do what we do without our amazing supporters.
