About this project

Local materials required for the project will be collected by the people themselves and the community will also provide all labour. Local NGO Tananua will donate expertise on system design, and will help the community – with whom they have been working for many years – to form a management committee to prevent the system falling into disrepair. This committee, made up entirely of Mukureku residents, will collect a small amount of money from users every month to create a maintenance fund. It will organise regular checks of the system, and make sure it is kept in good condition.
For more than two years I worked with the people of Mukureku. They are hardworking people who laugh a lot, despite very difficult living conditions. The single thing that would make the biggest difference in their lives would be to build a water supply. Women and children have to collect water every day some distance away. Because water is difficult to come by, families use as little as possible and this has serious health consequences. Sadly, children in Mukureku still die because of diarrhoea and malnutrition. With a water supply, the families would build toilets and be able to live in more hygienic conditions. With more water, the women would like to plant vegetable gardens so their children could eat a more nutritious diet.
The community needs to raise Rp 45,699,000 (Eur 3,243) to buy non-local materials like cement and iron pipes. Many donor organisations no longer wish to fund infrastructure projects, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to find ways to fund this kind of work. For this reason we are asking the Betterplace community for help.
