About this project
Karagwe is a rural, mountainous region in north-west Tanzania, characterized by fertile soil. Throughout the year rainfall in Karagwe exceeds the one in mid-European countries. But: It comes in two rainy seasons only lasting few months a year and with water systems missing completely, two thirds of the families suffer a lack of basic supplies. Water tanks can collect and store rain water runoff from rooftops during pluvial periods in order to make it available all year. With a central water supply on Chonyonyo Girls' Secondary School's campus pupils, teachers and staff could access clean water. Furthermore, inhabitants of surrounding villages also would benefit by the rain water, in case the school's demand is satisfied.
In the preceding project Ingenieure ohne Grenzen e.V. and its long-standing partner MAVUNO have performed exploratory drillings, in order to find a central groundwater supply. Unfortunately, all three drillings have been dry, so the project team and MAVUNO had to evaluate an alternative supply: rainwater. They made a map of the already built school buildings and maintained existing water tanks. Our current project “Wasserversorgung der Mädchenschule Chonyonyo” (Water Supply for Girls' Secondary School Chonyonyo) succeeded in this now shelved project.
Project Description
Girls' Secondary School Chonyonyo is currently being built by the Tanzanian NGO MAVUNO. At this residential girls' school up to 240 pupils will study and live. Including pupils, teachers, staff and, if possible, neighbours – all in all about 1,000 individuals – are going to be provided with clean water. Therefore, Ingenieure ohne Grenzen e.V. and MAVUNO are going to construct some voluminous water tanks, collecting and storing rain water from the school's rooftops. Small water tanks on the lunchroom's rooftops will be filled by the use of solar pumps in order to supply the kitchen with running water. Moreover, there is going to be water in the teachers' rooms and a central wash spot for the students. For this reason we are going to install a demand-orientated distribution system on site. In addition the school's staff is going to be instructed in running the water tanks and pumps, thus implementing a maintenance system for the whole water infrastructure.
