Since 1996, the SOS-Berufsausbildungszentrum (SOS apprentice centre) Berlin, in the Berlin district Wedding, has successfully supported young people on their way into working life and with that an independent and promising future. The focal point of their work is providing consultation, qualifications and education for young people with special needs. For the most part, many of the young people do not have any qualifications or come from families with difficult circumstances, presenting learning-, behavioral-, or language problems or who have been rehabilitated due to a variety of disabilities. What is needed, is the integration of a normal working life and for them to have goals. For many trainees this is a challenge, of which they gladly accept, and by doing so, they will be looked after by a professional team of trainers, social pedagogues and support teachers.
Currently there are approx. 120 trainees in the areas of; gastronomy, handicraft and office based work, who are all employed under a training contract with SOS-Berufsausbildungszentrum Berlin. In order to offer them a practical and future orientated traineeship including, individual and professional consultancy, with the aim to address their various demands, facilities are required, for which assistance through donors and sponsors is needed. Unfortunately public financing is not sufficient in meeting the needs of the trainees, who require additional support.
