    About this project

    M. Jaume Riutort from Asociación Educativa Y.W. Ollantaytambo is responsible for this project
Yachay Wasi is a day care center/kindergarten that provides a high quality early education which is open, fair, respectful, inclusive and flexible, rescuing the local traditions and the Inca heritage for children from the poorest areas and its adjacent communities in Ollantaytambo, 90 minutes' drive from east Cusco.

Yachay Wasi is attended by children from 2 to 6 years old, from 8.30am to 1pm. This allows their mothers to work and contribute to their family's finances while their children are well cared for and stimulated under professional supervision.

After three years of growing, improving and working in a succesfull way, this year we couldn´t start as normal. Ten days before school year began, and after three and a half years of our property lease, with our contract up in August of 2015, the owner of our building blocked the entrance with bricks to impede our access to our space and covered the whole facade with rubble in order to provoke a forced eviction.

We have initiated a penal process with the distict attorney’s office, as the owner of the property is accused of usurpation and violating basic constitutional rights by depriving children of education. The process is going very slowly as the judical department in peru is on an indefinite strike since the past three weeks, and things are taking a very long time.

Right now, there are 45 children enrolled in our preschool, and we had to rent a new space to continue educating them.
The new place is very basic, has just one room and a bathroom and a big green area. Therefore we need to build 3 classrooms and two bathrooms to assist our children, enriching their learning environment urgently.

In Peru of the 3.8 million people that live in extreme poverty, 2.1 million are children. In Ollantaytambo there are many social problems as alcoholism, intimate-partner violence and children abuse, child labor and malnutrition. There are no educational institutions, either public or private, for children aged under three years old. So women are not able to work while they are caring for their young children, or if they do, they have to carry their kids on their backs, leave them with their older siblings or other family members, or let their kids play in the street without supervision. This means that our daycare and kindergarten provides a valuable social service to the people of Ollantaytambo and the surrounding area, empowering children and their mothers to achieve a higher level of social well-being.

Please consider supporting Yachay Wasi's building expenses with a donation of $25 or $50. Your money will go a long way towards improving social well-being for our children and their families in rural Peru.
