About this project

We are fighting for a project that protects and rescues birds of prey, predominantly the griffon vulture which has almost died out in this region ( Velit Mountains and the Isles of Cres, Krk, Plavnik and Rab). But due to the commitment of Prof. Goran Susic and his team a new population of griffon vultures has developed. Apart from that, Mr. Susic´s organization looks after the complete, still unspoilt, natural habitat which is threatened by economic interests (especially the booming tourism and the construction boom in that area). The organization, which has been doing this for thirty years now, has been situated in the former school house of Beli on the Isle of Cres since 1993. From there they have looked after the steadily growing population of griffon vultures (in the beginning there were 25 breeding pairs now there are around 200.) But above all the importance and the value of the tremendously diverse eco-system which spreads from the coast to the almost 2000m high summits of the Velebit Mountains has also been discovered by that organization.
In the course of an ecologically sustainable tourism hiking trails were built, one cooperated with the local farmers and with the help of thousands of volunteers a well-equipped and informative eco-centre with a griffon vulture care unit and an information center in the old school house of Beli was created. In a huge avary annually up to 20 young griffon vultures which were hurt or which dropped out their nests or which almost drowned in the sea were raised and then freed again after their recovery- the success rate was 80 percent.
The organization, which was called Eko Centar Caput Insulae Beli (ECCIB) then, was awarded numerous prizes home and abroad for its commitment. We are former volunteers who worked at the Eko Centar and we do not want that great organization to stop their excellent and successful project. Unfortunately, the eco-centre in Beli had to be closed in 2012 as profit-orientated hotel owners, hunters and local politicians opposed the project. A new suitable substitute location for the eco-center could not be found on the Isle of Cres , even though local politicians promised it.
Fortunately ,the district council of the village of Sveti Juraj on the mainland offered help. They gave the organization a run-down house with land south of Sveti Juraj - but without water supply and power connections. But Goran Susic and his team are still enthusiastic and optimistic and do not give up fighting for their project. Now first of all, the house has to be renovated so that the staff and the volunteers can look after the griffon vultures in the care unit all the year round. Moreover, the organization has to buy a new motorboat soon in order to be able to continue rescuing the birds and to ring them. The only way to reach the breeding areas on the cliffs of the isles is by boat. If you want to know more about this organization, just go to: http://www.supovi.hr/?lang=en
