Mwamko Foundation is a charity based community organization registered in Kenya and operates in Kahawa Soweto slum in Roysambu Constituency Nairobi County. Its main objective it to provide education, youth and women empowerment, guidance and counseling on drug and substance abuse, rehabilitation, environmental management, mentor-ship, prevention of HIV/AIDS in children and gender based violence. The organization is run and managed by local youths and women with mission of being an agent of change in the society.
Mwamko Foundation works with informal settlements in Nairobi County namely Soweto, Kamae and Kiwanja slums. These slums have a population of about 100 000 people. Over 75% of these are young people and women. The community has only one public school, which is over populated hence high levels of illiteracy. Unemployment rates are above 75% thus high rate of poverty, which has resulted to young people engaging in commercial sex, drug abuse and criminal activities.
The Foundation has adopted social programmes in effort to curb this menace. Some of these project are Briquette making, urban farming (sack gardening), poultry keeping, mentor-ship programme and education centre.
Briquette making has helped the foundation to engage youths and children in income generating activities. So far, 200 youths and women are actively involved in this in this project. Urban farming, which is facing space challenge, is also picking up with 10 households doing it in small scale. The education centre is housing 50 children and about 300 are left out due to lack of accommodation. We are looking forward to start poultry keeping and strengthen mentor-ship programme.
The Foundation intents to create a platform where all children will find education, youths and women get income generating skills, which will transform their lives for good. Now the Foundation is championing the education centre to be able to accommodate the 300 children to have better education.
Our earnest appeal is for the support and get volunteers in the above areas so that we may positively intervene in the lives of these children, youth and women. Your support will bring a big smile, not only to the children but also to the whole family, whose their desire is to have better life in future.
