    About this project

Sandra Gruhlke from Ingenieure ohne Grenzen e.V. is responsible for this project
Since the 1st of June 2014 our project will be supported by the campaign "Golf for Charity" (http://www.cp-golf.com) with the goal to raise 100,000USD for the Chonyonyo Secondary School! We are looking forward to a successful cooperation!

The project region Karagwe, a district in Kagera, based northwest of Lake Victoria is characterized by its mountain ranges, fertile soils and lots of rain during the common rainy season. Secondary schooling is a fundamental necessity for sustainably development in the region but is today not always available. Statistics from 2008 show, only 44% of the regional population have secondary education. Plus: the importance of secondary education is one basic point in the governmental program.
Apart from that it’s mostly men getting a secondary education since girls commonly help with the household and the farming, even today.

Since 2010 Ingenieure ohne Grenzen (Engineers Without Borders Germany) supports the construction of the Chonyonyo Secundary School in several projects. One of which is the improvement of the sanitation, developing and constructing dry composting toilets, intelligent water supply and a biogas supply. For the ongoing construction of four class rooms for about 200 students in total, Ingenieure ohne Grenzen is today supporting its partner MAVUNO Project in Tanzania.
Construction costs can be minimized with efficient building techniques. On possible way to reduce the costs as well as the environmental impact is to use CEB (Compressed Earth Blocks) which use less cement and are therefore cheaper in production. Added to that, CEB do not need to be baked, saving wood in the end.
Accommodations for teachers and students as well as a central grocery store for the community and the school cafeteria are already in a final construction phase. With the start of school activities it’s planned to add additional building for a library, physics, chemistry and biology rooms.
With the help of several international partners but especially the village community, the school will officially be opened in 2015!
