    About this project

    R. Gensch from German Toilet Organization e. V. is responsible for this project
After the disastrous Typhoon Haiyan (local name: Yolanda) in the Philippines we are supporting our longtime Philippine partner the WAND Foundation in its efforts to construct urgently needed sanitation infrastructure in the affected areas.

According to recent UN-data so far more than 4000 people lost their lifes, around 920,000 people lost their houses with altogether more than 12 million people directly or indirectly affected by the Typhoon. Apart from urgently needed medicine, food, shelter and the reconstruction of roads, water and energy infrastructure one of the biggest challenges is the prevention of water-based diseases and epidemics. The hygienic conditions due to a lack of functioning sanitation infrastructure are already disastrous and the risk of disease and epidemic outbreaks is growing every day. Here the access to safe sanitation and hygiene products plays a key role in order to prevent cholera outbreaks like in Haiti in 2010.

While tents, emergency generators, blankets, food and alike can relatively easy be transported by international emergency relief agencies to the affected areas, toilets and sanitation infrastructure needs to be constructed onsite with locally available materials and is usually not considered to be flown in.

The cities of Tacloban and Ormoc were the most affected by the Typhoon with around 95% of the infrastructure destroyed and it needs a fast and experienced response to adequately support the local population.

The WAND Foundation is starting its mission today (Monday, Nov. 18) with 6 expert carpenters and masons and will transport the first pre-fabricated toilets from the neighboring island of Mindanao to Tacloban and Ormoc. Aim is the construction of at least 50 low-cost sanitation facilities (based on the local conditions either pour-flush latrines, pit latrines or urine diversion dry toilets) that guarantee the safe and dignified access to toilets for up to 50 people per toilet. Every day around 5-8 new toilets facilities can be build. In addition around 500 families will be provided with hygiene kits (including soap, water purification tabs, sanitary pads, toothbrushes etc.). Our partner organization anticipates that altogether around 2500 people can directly be reached with the intervention. We will of course provide regular updates on the implementation progress.

The WAND Foundation is an NGO based in the Southern Philippines (Mindanao) with whom we have collaborated intensively in the past. They are veterans of providing safe and sustainable sanitation solutions to Filipino communities. Already in 2011 the WAND Foundation supported the survivors of the Typhoon Washi in Cagayan de Oro and neighboring communities by constructing emergency toilets for the evacuation camps.
