50 years of independence - and the struggle continues
The year 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of Mozambique's independence. But what does freedom really mean - especially for women? The documentary “Filhas da Liberdade” takes this historic date as an opportunity to focus on the voices of women who fight for independence, self-determination and social justice on a daily basis.
We tell the stories of four impressive Mozambican women who fight against colonial and patriarchal structures in very different ways - be it as activists against gender-specific violence, as former GDR contract workers, as social workers with a colonial past or as independent entrepreneurs in Maputo. Her courage, her anger and her visions are representative of countless women whose stories are rarely heard.
What is the aim of the film?
“Filhas da Liberdade” will be an around 20-minutes short documentary that interweaves personal stories with the history of Mozambique and the question of true independence. It is about memory, resistance and solidarity - about past and present, linked by generations of courageous women.
