About this project
This idea emerged from the “reading-partner-project” with the same school in 2010. During that project we experienced the kids as being mentally imbalanced and not in a good physical shape. We learned that many of them don't see a future and thus are deeply unmotivated.
The 6th graders will take an active role in the preparation of their trip. Starting this month and leading up to the pilgrimage in March 2014, we will meet on Thursdays for 1 1/2 hours. Teams of five to six kids and two of the students will work on different topics of the Camino-Curriculum that our student group developed. Topics will be the Camino itself, it's location, meaning, and significance. Who was and is it pilgrimaged by? What is the reason of pilgrimage? We will talk about differences between cultures and religions. We will learn about Spain being part of the European Union. Every team will be responsible for organizing the program and dinner of one of the evenings we will spend in Spain. In addition, each team will do some fundraising.
After every teaching unit and at the end of each hiking day pupils, students, and teachers will write a short summary of what he or she learned. We will document the pilgrimage and children on film and photos.
Our goal is to stimulate the kids on multiple levels and to confront them with challenges, both physical as well as intellectual, which we hope will have lasting impacts on their lives.
