In 2022, the volcanic island of Stromboli was brought to its knees by a devastating fire caused by a television crew, which burnt 50% of the island’s vegetation. This was followed by flooding during the first heavy summer rains, which washed tonnes of mud, ash and sand from the slopes into the village.
The regenerative agriculture project was created as a proactive response to the disasters and the need to protect the village from the fire and the mountain from the people by preserving the strip of land between the village and the nature reserve.
So far, the first hectare of land has been recovered and the following work has been carried out:
- clearing and mowing the ground
- restoration of the dry stone walls and construction of new retaining walls with pruning waste
- planting of caper plants
- training and pruning the surviving olive trees and planting new trees
- restoration of an old cistern and installation of a drip irrigation system
Thanks to the knowledge we have gained in these first years of field experience, which has allowed us to consolidate the project, we are ready to move on to the next phases.
With the new funds we can:
- ensure the annual maintenance of the first hectare of land
- enlarge the project area
- restore the network of paths used by our ancestors and make them accessible to all
- restore the old agricultural knowledge by combining it with new regenerative farming methods
Your support allows us to take the next step in this important project and strengthen Stromboli in a sustainable way. Help us realize our vision of a greener and more resilient island!
