Nascente Viva Stage 2025: Native trees for an indigenous village in Brazil

Nascente Viva is a socio-environmental project that collaborates with an indigenous village to restore the spring and riverbed of the Jaguapirú River, along with its riparian forest. Situated in the Jaguapirú-Bororó indigenous village in Dourados-MS, Brazil. The project tackles critical water supply challenges, which are a significant issue throughout the village.  Our mission is gradually restore the village's water reserves while educating and empowering the community. The restoration of Jaguapirú river is our initial step on this mission. 

We have built a seed house, a greenhouse and a cistern. We have provided environmental education for schoolchildren. We have activated the source of the Jaguapirú River, made its riverbed and replanted part of its banks with native trees. 

Every year, a new section of the Jaguapirú River is planted until the original forest that secures and protects the water is restored. 

With your donation, we want to plant 2,500 trees in the area marked red on the map. Each tree costs €2, we need a total of €5,000 to plant the 2500 trees. The trees will be planted by pupils from the indigenous schools Guateka and Tengatuí by January 2026. The trees will be cared for responsibly for as long as necessary.

Project Origins and Team
Nascente Viva emerged out of an urgent need to combat the silting of the Jaguapirú stream, which led to a concerning water shortage. Initiated in 2017 by Lenir Paiva Flores Garcia, the project involves the Federal University of Grande Dourados (UFGD) and the association Tarahumara Fans e.V. The team also includes the Association of Organic Producers of Mato Grosso do Sul (APOMS) and indigenous rights lawyer Aquiles Paulus from Instituto Justitia, with whom we signed a cooperation agreement in 2022. The institute also manages the project's finances locally. 

How We Make a Difference
We invest in practical environmental education through partnerships with village schools. These schools are central to every step we take, actively involved as key partners. Students, teachers, and team members participate in activities like the construction of the cistern the nursery, and the tree planting actions. Currently, we work with the Escola Estadual Indígena Intercultural Guateka, where the cistern and nursery are installed, and the Escola Municipal Indígena Tengatuí Marangatu, where the seed house is located. Supported by recognized organizations and awards such as "Marco Verde," "Coração Verde," and "Sustainable Schools," we are an example of sustainability and community dedication.
