Saving eyesight in rural western Tanzania

TanZanEye e.V.
A project from TanZanEye e.V. in Mpanda, Tanzania
TanZanEye e.V. works to ensure that (eye) health is distributed more fairly in regions that are catastrophically under-served. As if the people there have no right to sight. We would be happy to get your support.

About this project

Karsten Paust from TanZanEye e.V. is responsible for this project
Over 5 million people live along Lake Tanganyika in western Tanzania in the remote and structurally weak regions of Rukwa, Katavi and Kigoma. Most of them have no adequate eye care. Up to 80% of visual impairments can be treated with education, medication, surgery or glasses.
In response to the need, TanZanEye initially carried out regular, 2-week relief missions. At the same time, eye clinics were set up in the capitals of the regions and eye stations spread across the regions. Over 100 specialists have now been trained, including ophthalmic assistants ("eye nurses") for comprehensive basic eye care, optometrists for the supply of glasses and the care of the visually impaired, eye surgeons and ophthalmologists. For details, see the KeyFacts.

The project has 4 pillars:
1. Training of specialists
2. Infrastructure and equipment
3. Continuing education
4. Sustainability

Medical professionals are trained in the country. We have built several eye clinics and branches from scratch in western Tanzania. Continuous training includes the twice-yearly practical workshops using the Arclight project's simulation tools, posters and handouts. This is complemented by remote hybrid training and an online e-learning book. This works on Android and Apple devices and can be downloaded free of charge as an APP.

We hope to achieve sustainability by integrating the facilities and trained staff into local health services.
There is still a need for education, training, equipment and work to establish sustainable structures: Success in global development does not depend on what we think communities need - it is about understanding what they really need. Too many well-intentioned projects fail because they overlook one crucial factor: local circumstances. As donors and development partners, our role is not to dictate solutions, but to listen, learn and support locally driven initiatives.
