In the Afghan village of Ebad Kalah, located in Logar Province, we built the first primary school in the area in 2017, providing education for approximately 130 students. Since its opening, the number of students has steadily increased, as families from surrounding villages have also started sending their children to Ebad Kalah. On one hand, this is due to the lack of alternative schools nearby; on the other hand, parents highly appreciate the school—especially because of its stable school building, which offers a safe and supportive learning environment.
However, for the past year and a half, five classes have once again been taught outdoors, and new first-graders cannot be admitted due to a lack of capacity. Learning under the open sky presents significant challenges: scorching heat in the summer, freezing temperatures in the winter, and no protection from rain and wind make lessons extremely difficult. Without blackboards, desks, or learning materials, focused learning becomes nearly impossible, and distractions from the surroundings further disrupt the children’s attention.
The consequences for the children who are turned away are severe. Without access to education, their chances of escaping illiteracy—already widespread in Afghanistan—diminish even further. Currently, nearly two-thirds of adults in Afghanistan cannot read or write, significantly limiting their opportunities for a better future. Education is the key to breaking this cycle and giving children the chance to improve their own lives and those of their families in a lasting way.
We urgently need your support to provide these students with a dignified learning environment. On the adjacent property, we plan to build six fully equipped classrooms, two teachers' rooms, and sanitary facilities. Additionally, a heartfelt wish of the children will finally come true: a playground—the only one in the area. Because learning is not just about acquiring knowledge; it is also about having the chance to experience childhood.
Notes:
- 100% of the donations, minus Betterplace fees, will benefit our project.
- Approximately 70% of the project funding is secured. We urgently need your help for the remaining 30%.
- These are estimated project costs. Due to the volatile situation, these may vary slightly.
- Excess donations will be used to secure our education projects in Afghanistan (purpose remains the same).
