About this project

Jörg Behning from AFRICA(k)now e.V. is responsible for this project
Africare Nursery and Primary School and its more than 200 children have to move out of their rented building in Mbale in south-east Uganda because schools are no longer allowed to be run in residential buildings in Uganda.

The school in question is run by our partner organisation, Africa (k)now Uganda. Thanks to its syllable- and sound-based learning method, it effectively and successfully teaches pupils reading and writing skills. It serves as a model school for progressive and effective learning for almost 60 partner schools linked to us through teacher training programmes.

In order to continue these successes into the future and to preserve the children's school, we would like to build a new school building, a separate latrine and a kitchen close to the old school. Our Ugandan partner organisation has already acquired a suitable plot of land.

The kitchen will provide the children with a hot meal every day. Without a full stomach, learning cannot take place and without it the school will not receive an operating licence. It is to be built using simple construction methods and local materials: Rough stones and sand will be used for the foundations. The building itself, the integrated stove and the flue will be made from burnt bricks. The roof construction is made from unprocessed timber and covered with the usual corrugated iron. Finally, the exterior is plastered, followed by a waterproof coat of paint. It often rains in south-east Uganda.
