About this project

Noah Müthing from Deutsche Welthungerhilfe e.V. is responsible for this project
In Burundi, we are working together with the United Nations World Food Programme to implement a comprehensive school canteen program that enhances educational opportunities. It is estimated that more than half of the children under five years old in this East African country suffer from chronic malnutrition, which leads to developmental disorders with often lifelong consequences.

Most families rely on agriculture, but available land is scarce. They also lack the resources and knowledge to improve their meager yields and adequately feed their families. This has direct impact on school enrollment rates, as many children are needed as labor on the fields and at home. Girls, in particular, face worse educational opportunities. When money is tight, sons are prioritized for schooling. A lack of education often leads to lifelong poverty and social exclusion.

The school canteen program in the Kirundo province promotes education for all. It encourages parents to send their children to school because they receive a warm and nutritious meal there. It also strengthens the local economy and food systems, as the basic ingredients for lunch are increasingly sourced from local producers. In addition, we support the establishment of school gardens that regularly contribute vegetables for a balanced diet. We install ecological toilets and rainwater collection systems to improve access to water and hygiene in schools.

Our actions on the ground:
  • We support school canteens and vegetable gardens at 161 primary schools. To supply the schools with locally grown staple foods, small farmers are assisted with high-quality seeds and training on improved farming techniques, storage, and marketing of their crops.
  • We strengthen the capacity of 50 farmers' cooperatives with over 10,000 members to improve their market access.
  • Through the construction of toilets and rainwater tanks at schools, along with training for students, teachers, and parents, we improve hygiene conditions. For girls, we provide materials for menstrual hygiene, such as pads and soap.
  • We promote exchange between schools to spread successful vegetable growing techniques.
  • To reduce firewood usage, we introduce energy-efficient stoves in the canteens and promote reforestation around the schools.
