February 19, 2025 marks the fifth anniversary of the racist attack in Hanau in which Gökhan Gültekin, Sedat Gürbüz, Said Nesar Hashemi, Mercedes Kierpacz, Hamza Kurtović, Vili-Viorel Păun, Fatih Saraçoğlu, Ferhat Unvar and Kaloyan Velkov were murdered.
In the year of the attack, Serpil Unvar founded the educational initiative Ferhat Unvar e. V. for her son on November 14, 2020, Ferhat's birthday. In the association, we are fighting together for a better future for young people and believe that education is the key to this. That's why we train young people affected by discrimination as trainers who teach other young people at schools and educational institutions. We offer workshops and lectures on anti-discrimination and empowerment - always from the perspective of those affected and always based on the events and consequences of the attack on February 19, 2020. #EducationforFuture
Speaking of democracy: the Bundestag elections are due on February 23, 2025. It is incredibly important that we raise our voices against all kinds of misanthropic ideologies and stand up for humanity and a better future. We cannot fight this battle alone.
As an association, we rely on donations. In 2024, we gave 80 workshops and trained 24 teamers. We also organized many other events, such as an international conference in Hanau in 2024 with victims of terrorist attacks and more than 250 guests from all over Europe. People affected by hate crimes (right-wing extremism, racism, anti-Muslim racism, anti-Semitism, queer hostility and police violence) and many experts came together to strengthen international networking and jointly discuss and develop sustainable strategies for prevention and education.

Even five years after the attack in Hanau, we want to continue: We want to train young people nationwide as trainers and give our workshops across the country, we want to continue to network and empower those affected by hate crimes and extremist attacks.
