About this project

Rice is one of the main staple foods in The Gambia, with an annual consumption of around 117 kg per capita. Unfortunately, only around 5.7% of the national requirement is produced in the country itself. In recent years, the price of rice has risen dramatically, which has put a great strain on the economic situation of the population.
In Sutukoba, a small village in eastern Gambia, rice has been cultivated for many years. The project was initiated by the village community and has been continuously expanded. Today it covers a cultivation area of around 20 hectares, spread over 530 plots. The village community has formed its own committee to take care of the operating and maintenance costs.
At present, the fields are irrigated with the help of diesel generators, but this is associated with high fuel costs. In order to increase profitability and at the same time reduce the environmental impact, a switch to solar energy is planned. This should not only reduce cultivation costs, but also make a sustainable contribution to environmental protection.
Important facts about rice cultivation in Sutukoba:
- Area under cultivation: approx. 20 ha
- Plots: 530
- Planting/harvest: up to twice a year
- Yield: approx. 2,580 sacks of high-quality rice, each weighing 50 kg, with a current market value of around
84.000 Euro
The village community in Sutukoba is extremely committed and is actively working towards sustainable and independent agriculture. However, additional external help is needed to cover the costs of converting to a solar irrigation system of this size.
The project includes the installation of solar panels and the necessary steel structure. The current costs for their manufacture amount to around €5,500.
Sutukoba needs your help for this project.
With your donation, we would like to make the transition from fossil fuels to sustainable solar energy, significantly reduce cultivation costs, increase the rice harvest and secure a stable future for the village community.
