About this project

Manuel Baier from HBUFC e.V. (Deutscher Förderverein) is responsible for this project
My name is Iris Henkel, and I have been living in South Africa for 18 years – in Hout Bay, a suburb of Cape Town.

For several years, I have been the Managing Director of the South African social organization "Hout Bay United Football Community Trust" (HBUFC) as well as the supporting German association "Hout Bay United Football Community e.V.," which was founded a year ago.

HBUFC was established 10 years ago after the principal of a school in a socially disadvantaged area asked for help. Although his students all loved playing soccer, many skipped classes, used drugs, and disrupted the school environment.

Hout Bay United Football Community (HBUFC) is known for supporting street children and youth from social hotspots, as well as young adults without formal education. We teach life skills in various ways both on and off the soccer field. Currently, we directly support about 700 girls and boys, as well as young women and men, aged 5 to 28. We also assist their families with various workshops and programs.

Our motto: Soccer helps unite society.

Our impact per year:

  • We support 700 children up to 5 times per week on the soccer field or in the classroom
  • 88 training sessions take place every week
  • Our 4 team buses transport an average of 350 children and young people every day
  • We organize internships or permanent positions for about 90 young unemployed people (outside HBUFC)
  • We regularly offer value-based workshops from U12 to elite teams
  • We provide around 10,000 meals per year
  • We help local schools and kindergartens with transport
  • We are partners with schools and institutions for children and young people with disabilities and organize encounters and more.
