About this project

The project Empowering Youth In Sustainable Agriculture (EYISA) is an initiative by the NGO Shorten the Distance e.V., aiming to sustainably improve the living conditions of children and young people in Malawi in the areas of health, education, and agriculture. Our focus is on empowering young people who, by building knowledge and practical skills in permaculture, can secure their own future and make a positive contribution to the community.
Our EYISA team in Kasungu, Malawi, faces the challenge of increasing interest in our permaculture project. Many participants want to learn more about sustainable agriculture, but often the journey to our project site is long, and one day is not enough to fully acquire the necessary knowledge.
To address this issue, the dedicated EYISA team plans to build a simple accommodation – a basic yet comfortable hut for our visitors. This will enable participants to stay on-site for several days and engage intensively with the principles of permaculture. The extended learning opportunity will not only enhance knowledge transfer but also strengthen the sustainability of the project.
The hut will be constructed from traditional materials by young people who have successfully completed their permaculture course. This initiative, in collaboration with the Permaculture Paradise Institute, combines cultural traditions with modern approaches to sustainable agriculture, providing young people in Kasungu with a valuable opportunity to apply their learned skills practically.
Building the hut is not just an investment in the project’s infrastructure; it is also an investment in the future of the young people involved. A place for learning and exchange enables the development of sustainable agricultural practices while simultaneously strengthening the community. Additionally, the EYISA team works closely with the local water committee to ensure the care of permaculture gardens. Three times a week, they cultivate vegetables and fruit trees together, contributing not only to food security but also enhancing local biodiversity.
With your support, we can realize this important project. Every donation, large or small, brings us one step closer to our goal of providing young people in Malawi with the opportunity to build a better future through sustainable agriculture.
