My name is Silke Schmiedel, and I am fighting for the life of my seven-year-old grandson, Lukas Robert Schmiedel, from Hohenmölsen in the Burgenland district. Lukas, a lively and active boy, was unexpectedly diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG).
In early August 2024, Lukas spent the weekend with me. While playing, his right eye suddenly rolled uncontrollably toward his nose, which alarmed us. After consulting with the pediatrician, we immediately went to the emergency room. After numerous tests, the shocking diagnosis was confirmed: a malignant and inoperable tumor in his brain.
Lukas, who is in the second grade, loves school and is an enthusiastic explorer of nature. He is passionate about science and dreams of becoming a scientist to find solutions that help everyone. He also thrives at the Creativity Center in Zeitz, whether playing chess, creating art, writing, or engaging in music and dance.
Lukas is currently undergoing chemotherapy with radiation to slow the tumor's growth. We hope to improve his remaining quality of life and extend his time with us. Lukas has many wishes he still hopes to fulfill: He dreams of visiting Legoland, Disneyland, natural history museums, zoos, and more.
Our family faces significant challenges in providing Lukas with the best medical care and fulfilling his wishes. Some promising treatments are not covered by insurance. Additionally, we live on the 5th floor of a building without an elevator, which will become a problem as his condition progresses. We urgently need a wheelchair-accessible apartment.
Together with the Harzer Sonnenzwerge association, we are raising funds for Lukas’ medical care and to make his dreams come true. Every bit of help counts—whether through a donation or by sharing this appeal.
Please help us fulfill Lukas' dreams and continue to bring him joy.
