About this project

Saskia Kuzlik from Abasha is responsible for this project
The Eco Soccer Championship is a groundbreaking initiative taking place in Cameroon that harnesses the power of football (soccer) to drive positive environmental and social impact. Established by the organizations CENEC Cameroon and Greening Forward in 2022, the project aims to unite communities, empower youth, and protect the planet through a series of engaging football tournaments and sustainability programs.

With the funds raised, the Eco Soccer Championship project aims to:
  • Impact over 300 children and youth in Cameroon through its football and educational programs
  • Collect and recycle more than 3 tons of plastic waste from the local communities
  • Provide school supplies like books, pens, and backpacks to support the participating students
☮️ Promoting peace and inclusion:
Soccer is a unifying force that transcends borders and brings people together. The Eco Soccer Championship leverages this power to foster greater understanding, cooperation, and solidarity among diverse communities. By creating a shared experience and platform for collaboration, the event promotes peace, inclusion, and cross-cultural exchange.

🌱 Environmental stewardship:
At the heart of the Eco Soccer Championship lies a deep commitment to environmental protection. Each participant team is required to collect a significant amount of plastic waste as a condition for registration, leading to the collection of over 5,000 kg of plastic in the inaugural events.
Through workshops, educational activities, and hands on experiences, the participants develop a deeper understanding of the pressing environmental challenges facing their communities and the role they can play in driving positive change.

📚 Supporting underprivileged youth:
The Eco Soccer Championship goes beyond just environmental impact. It also serves as a vehicle to support underprivileged youth in the region. The winning team is rewarded with essential school supplies, including backpacks, pens, pencils, books and other educational resources. This not only promotes environmental awareness but also ensures that the benefits of the event extend to those who need it most.

🌍 Alignment with Global Goals and Cameroon's 2035 Development Agenda:
The Eco Soccer Championship aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Cameroon's 2035
Development Agenda
:
  • SDG 4: Quality Education
  • SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
  • SDG 13: Climate Action
  • SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
The event's focus on environmental protection, youth empowerment, and community development directly supports Cameroon's goal of becoming an emerging economy by 2035 and achieving sustainable development that improves the well-being of its citizens.
