Construction of a women's shelter in Gomba District, Uganda

Gender-based violence and sexual crimes rank third and fourth in Uganda's official crime statistics for 2022, accounting for 14% of all crimes in the country. Women are affected in 70% of the cases of gender-based violence and in 86% of the cases of sexual crimes. However, the number of unreported cases is significantly higher.

Together with the 'Totya Platform,' we aim to enable the construction of a women's shelter, where we offer support to victims of sexual violence through counseling, as well as medical, psychological, and legal assistance. The shelter will serve as a refuge for victims, survivors, and individuals at risk of sexual abuse.

The goal is to provide a three-month stay, offering personal counseling and training in sustainable entrepreneurship. Totya aims to empower women to establish businesses with growth potential—an aspect often overlooked by organizations focusing on enhancing women's entrepreneurial skills.

The holistic healing program extends beyond supporting survivors and includes parents, guardians, caregivers, and family members. Totya recognizes that the impact of abuse affects the entire environment, necessitating psychosocial support. The introduction of a home monitoring program serves as a crucial pillar in the overall healing process, ensuring comprehensive support for those affected by sexual violence.
