Lions of Science (L.O.S.) is a new internetplatform and Non-Profit-Organization with a range of very interesting partnerships from the Goethe-Institut in Nairobi, The Kenyan Institue for Science and Technology, the German Embassy, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), to the Kenyan technology incubators iHub and NaiLab.
Lions of Science has launched an award to promote and award Kenyan students with innovative scientific projects that improve standards of living or the social coexistence. The awards will recognize home grown solutions to local problems by applying scientific creativity. Students can upload their projects on the website and choose between different categories like Engineering, Health, Environment, ICT/Media or also Indigenous Knowledge. The submitted projects are then assessed by a jury. It is aimed to support the three winners on their way to further develop their projects, if possible until market maturity. For this purpose L.O.S. will also distribute cash prices. However as there are no corporate sponsors yet we fully depend on private or institutional donations to execute a successfull award presentation.
The first award presentation will take place the 27th of July 2013 in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut in Nairobi and we are happy to notice that the theoretical L.O.S.-concept finds a very positive response among the Kenyan students.
L.O.S. was founded in Berlin/Germany to tighten the transnational scientific, academic and entrepreneurial relations between Kenya and Germany in a fresh and inspiring way. By presenting the scientific spirit and innovative creativity of young Kenyan academics and their home grown solutions, L.O.S contributes to highlighting the dynamic changes taking place on the African continent. It is this side of the African reality – the side not sufficiently covered by the media – which will inspire and encourage young people.
We are very proud of the fact, that since April 2013 Lions of Science now stands under the patronage of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Nairobi. Also the German Heinrich-Böll-Foundation (German Green Party) now became a strategic L.O.S. partner and will provide paid internships for some of the participants.
You like the approach? Now it's about you to support the next generation of innovative Kenyan entrepreneurs!
